Tom Cabrerizo is a successful entrepreneur who became business-savvy at an early age. At the age of 14, Tom began to sell t-shirts and other apparel at a flea market in Miami. During this time, he learned to effectively communicate with customers while taking notes about trends in the clothing industry. After a short time, he became an experienced salesman who understood the value of a satisfied customer. He learned how to be persuasive and communicative and his customers began to trust his merchandise and the quality of his product. Tomas's small business began to grow and flourish. By the time Cabrerizo was 17 years old, he had 20 employees who were actively working for him. He managed to turn one small stand into six market stands where his employees conducted sales on his behalf. The mark of a great salesman lies in their ability to replicate themselves. Over the course of just three short years, his small t-shirt stand boasted loyal customers and a dedicated staff throughout the flea market. The sales staff was trained in sales as well as customer satisfaction, which allowed his business to grow at an impressive speed.
When the flea market closed in 1982, Tom Cabrerizo had gained a fair amount of business and sales knowledge that would be beneficial to him throughout his career. Combining his sales experience with his skills in market analysis, he felt strongly about continuing his clothing sales venture. He then founded Shoreline Sales, a clothing distributor that was based in Florida. Shoreline Sales worked with small and independent retailers throughout Florida while providing them with locally manufactured clothing. His business was extremely successful and provided valuable career opportunities for ambitious people throughout Florida. Seven years after it’s inception, Shoreline Sales had managed to generate over $20 million in sales, while establishing themselves as clothing experts.
Tom Cabrerizo used his keen business sense to develop a plan that would take his business a step further. The risky idea involved broadening the company and the services that it provides. They began to manufacture the apparel independently while integrating the production line vertically. Although the change in operations seemed initially risky, Tom learned to trust his business and experience. He worked to form Trends Clothing, which sold clothes to national retailers. This expanded his customer base from people throughout Florida to customers throughout the United States. Trends Clothing began to provide its services to well known retailers like JC Penny, Target, Sears, and even the retail giant Walmart. After about three years of dedicated work, Trends Clothing had generated over $40 million in annual revenue. This success inspired Tom Cabrerizo to continue to explore new markets and business opportunities.
As Tomas Cabrerizo began to learn about the manufacturing business, he noted the competitive nature of the market. Large manufacturing companies throughout Asia were creating good products while spending less on labor and production costs. Tomas felt that it was tough to compete with a company that could offer quality products at a smaller price. After dedicating time to study the market and its fluctuations, Tom Cabrerizo felt confident that he could take his business a step further.
To compete with cheaper manufacturers, he began to expand his business throughout Haiti and the Dominican Republic. There, he orchestrated sewing and screen-printing facility openings, which created over 2,500 jobs for the local communities. With an increased staff and a competitive edge, his business practices earned the interest of more and more companies. Cabrerizo licensed brand name labels like Ocean Pacific, BUM Equipment, Jimmy Z, Ecko, and Blue Marlin. As he oversaw his new facilities and his manufacturing practices, his business began to expand quickly. His company had managed to incorporate knitting and spinning mills, dye houses, and screen printing into their practices. They were also able to complete their own embroidery and sewing in factories that the company owned themselves.
Trends Clothing went on to win Target’s prestigious “Vendor of the Year” award multiple times throughout their years in the clothing business. Cabrerizo’s business had grown to an astonishing $140 million in sales annually while employing approximately 3,000 workers worldwide as well as 900 domestic workers. Starting from a small t-shirt stand in a flea market, Tomas had built a clothing empire. He felt empowered to sell Trends Clothing in order to free up time to explore additional business ventures.
Tom Cabrerizo was able to refocus his keen business skills to tackle the real estate market with a fresh perspective. He began to transform struggling properties into valuable, well-managed spaces that tenants felt proud to use. The properties were spread around the South Florida area but as his experience and real estate knowledge began to grow, he explored properties through the southern United States. He quickly developed his real estate skills and was able to renovate properties in as little time as possible. His main interest during this time was in multi-family properties as well as commercial real estate. Throughout this exploration into the real estate market, Tomas Cabrerizo felt confident enough to found his own real estate management company.
