The business world has passed them by Private company with little external influence means they operate far behind the times - no regular performance appraisals, little training & development opportunities for younger people, hard to come by raises (there was recently a period of 5 years with no raises for employees). No people of color or females in positions of real authority, and little room for career progression for younger people. The company is dominated by old style ways of doing things, from HR to IT, commercial functions, etc. Complete lack of strategy & professional leadership from the top. In an era of increased transparency, the senior management team runs the business like a secretive clique with an occasional facade of "old-style town hall meetings" held in an out-dated factory where the owner gives an uneducated, rambling explanation of how the company is doing (mostly about profit vs. budget) that leaves many people scratching their heads as to what was the point of what he just said. Best way to get ahead at this company? Be a family member or high school buddy of the owner. It is NOT a meritocracy.
