Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy is an exciting field that focuses on helping people of all ages continue to partake in their everyday activities. This includes assisting individuals with injuries or disabilities to improve functioning and independence skills, adapting/modifying an older adult’s Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) so he/she can complete necessary tasks like tooth brushing, or working with children with disabilities in the school setting to build social skills so they can participate in their education to the fullest extent. Occupational therapists employ a variety of techniques to ensure that their clients are able to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.

The beginning of occupational therapy

The field of occupational therapy first gained notoriety in the years following World War One. The discipline was, in fact, created out of necessity, as many soldiers returned from the Great War with significant physical, emotional, and psychological injuries. Because of their advanced training, occupational therapists were able to help many soldiers to successfully adapt to life after leaving the battlefield.

Recent advances in occupational therapy

Although the field of occupational therapy has existed since the late 19th century, it has seen great advancements in the last few decades, especially within the United States.
