A Company Run on the Backs of Interns Essentially Red Hen Press is run by interns. When I worked there, they had heads of departments that worked for free with maybe a gas stipend thrown in. They know that it's tough to get work in the publishing field and that people are willing to put up with unpaid labor for a line on their resume. Even when you do get paid, I don't think anyone here made more than $12 / hour. The owners are narcissists. The CEO has no problem talking down to others. They publish pretentious rags written by their friends. It's essentially a practice in self-flattery. When you finally do decide to leave, they'll replace you with another intern without any hesitation.
