What's the true value of a paycheck? With layoffs becoming the norm in our industry and plenty of talented journalists out there desperate for work, I can't actively discourage anyone from applying to openings at this company. A job's a job -- we've all got mouths to feed (even if it's just our own), so if you're qualified and in need of a steady paycheck, go for it. But there's a big fat warning sign I wish I could post outside this place's office: "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here." Hope of career advancement. Hope of creating meaningful work. Even hope of stability -- Bauer Xcel has been as guilty of out-of-the-blue layoffs as other media companies. I was fortunate enough to leave on my own terms (in case the old "disgruntled fired employee" straw man gets tossed around here). But it's Labor Day 2019, and in the spirit of the holiday, I thought I'd at least try to warn others about yet another media venture that will not in any way value your labor (mentorship and inspiring leadership does that, not free coffee and happy hours). I know it's tough out there, job applicant, but sometimes it can be even tougher in here. Best of luck to you on this decision and your career.
