Dysfunctional family-owned company When going through their hiring and training process, you'll be repeatedly told about the company being family-owned and that you'd be joining them not only as an employee but as member of their warm extended family. Ironically, the family-owned nature of the company is precisely the reason the workplace is a nightmare. They have children and siblings occupying key positions. These people inherited their jobs and cannot be removed for unprofessional conduct or incompetence. This is why you'd frequently hear top people scream profanity out their offices, refer to women as "chicks", blurt out political comments and other bad behavior. Favoritism is a serious issue. Suddenly, your peer would be chosen for better shifts or promotion opportunities -- and that person would almost always be the one who socializes with a manager outside work. During my time there, there was no open bidding processes for shifts and advancement. They don't even bother giving an illusion of fairness. Going to HR to complain about a family member is job suicide for obvious reasons. Since key people are selected through inheritance and enjoys absolute job security, the quality of management is dismal which is why this company does not grow and there are virtually no advancement opportunities.
