Laurie Fajardo is a Professor of Radiology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
A professor in the Radiology Department of the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Laurie Fajardo is also on the Board of Directors of the General Electric - Association of University Radiologists Radiology Research Academic Fellowship, more commonly known as GERRAF. Unique in the field of radiology, Dr. Fajardo spends some of her time and effort conducting biomolecular research. In addition to her Director role with GERRAF, she sits on other various boards and works closely with companies focused on digital breast tomosynthesis technologies. It is her dedication to research and expanding her reach and influence serving on these various boards that lends to her success.
For the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Dr. Fajardo, currently practices at two breast clinic locations. Here, she has established state-of-the-art breast cancer screening programs that include digital breast tomosynthesis (a technology pioneered and clinically tested by Dr. Fajardo), whole breast screening ultrasound, stereotactic breast biopsy (a technology developed by Dr. Fajardo), ultrasound breast biopsy and breast MRI. She has several ongoing basic science projects and clinical trials research protocols based at the University of Iowa and elsewhere through her many national collaborations. She has been an active leader with the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN), an NIH-funded clinical trials group that evaluates the value of imaging in cancer clinical trials, serving in several leadership capacities since its inception over 15 years ago.
As a member of GERRAF’s Board of Directors, Laurie Fajardo conducts a programmatic review of the organization and helps shape it through strategic planning efforts. She also supports their annual funding efforts and is responsible for fostering relationships with their program sponsors. Dr. Fajardo reviews grant applications and assists in selecting those to award such grants. Provide guidance and mentorship to fellow awardees.

Laurie Fajardo is a woman with an extremely decorated educational history. In 1980, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis in 1980. Unlike many medical students who take some time between undergraduate schooling and medical school – or find that medicine is their passion later in life – Laurie enrolled in The Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago the fall after graduating with her Bachelor’s degree. Laurie became Dr. Fajardo when she graduated from medical school in 1984. An incredible accomplishment, it would not be her last graduate-level endeavor.
After several years practicing medicine and focusing on radiology and medical imaging, among other things, Laurie Fajardo joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1990. As an Associate Professor and Director of the Tucson Breast Center at the medical school, she managed this newly established, freestanding outpatient clinic, supervising the clinic’s faculty radiologists, nurses, and breast imaging technologists. In addition, Laurie instituted and oversaw quality assurance systems, clinic accreditation, audit and reporting programs and initiated clinical research program and protocols.
After four years in Tucson, Laurie moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where she became Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Research at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. In her four years in Virginia, Dr. Fajardo developed a research program with the university’s Department of Radiology. The program’s activities included basic, applied, translational, and clinical research. She worked directly with the Chair of the Radiology Department to establish the proper infrastructure and administrative support for the program, and developed processes to handle research grant applications, submissions, execution and reporting. The Division of Research Laurie Fajardo established and grew eventually comprised of 20 faculty members and employees.
In 1998, she moved 155 miles northeast to work for Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions as Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Research and Director of Breast Imaging and Intervention. In her role as Vice Chair for Clinical Research, Dr. Fajardo worked with her Department Chair to develop goals, strategy, and funding opportunities for clinical imaging research for her program and the department. Moreover, the two university employees developed a mentorship program for faculty clinicians and a clinical research grant application process. As Director, she had programmatic oversight over the Breast Imaging and Intervention Clinic and governed faculty, clinic, research, and support staff. In addition, she had strategic planning and annual budgetary oversight for the clinic’s operations and breast imaging research program.
In conjunction with her work at the Baltimore institution, Laurie Fajardo took another step in continuing her education, beginning a Masters program at from Johns Hopkins University in 2000. She graduated in 2002 with an MBA in Business of Medicine.
Upon completing the Johns Hopkins MBA program, she took the job she currently holds at the University of Iowa College of Medicine as a professor in the school’s Department of Radiology. It is here where Laurie managed the $50 million operation of professional and technical medical imaging. Her duties included overseeing capital management, clinical operations, information technology, medical education, and medical imaging research enterprises. Not until 2007, five years later, did she join the Board of Directors for GERRAF. Today, she continues her role sitting on the organization’s board, contributing in a number of areas. She is also a member of the Radiological Society of North America, serving presenting as the chair of its Research and Education Foundation’s Corporate Development Committee. She has also served in many leadership capacities for the American College of Radiology. She was honor by the Association of University Radiologists when they bestowed their Gold Medal Award to her in 2008.
In addition to all she has accomplished in her storied and unfinished career, Laurie Fajardo completed Iowa City’s Community Leadership Program in Iowa City in 2007, and received its honor as its Health Care Hero in 2009. She has been an active “communitarian” within each community she has lived. She is a member of the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club, currently serves as an officer for the Johnson County Area Women’s Network and contributes innumerable volunteer hours to the Iowa City Community School District, a local Boy Scout troop and to several community volunteer organizations.
Through all of her experiences, Laurie has become widely regarded as a skilled professional in medical imaging, radiology, MRIs, clinical research and trials, medical education, the medical field of cancer, healthcare management, translational research, and much more.
