Nick Gholkar is currently in his junior year at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. He's an accounting major who hopes to work for a top 10 public accounting firm after graduation and then move on to private equity mergers and acquisitions. Gholkar is a stellar student who was named to the Dean's List during the last semester. He's also a candidate member of Beta Alpha Psi, a national accounting honor society. In addition to focusing on his schoolwork, he also leaves time in his schedule for sports, charity work and travel.
Gholkar loves sports, particularly baseball, football and soccer. His favorite baseball team is the Chicago Cubs, though he also cheers on the current home team, the Kansas City Royals. He also cheers on the Kansas City Chiefs, who recently got a new coach, Andy Reid. Gholkar believes the new coach will be a boon for the team. Gholkar also finds time to enjoy soccer and likes to support the city's major league team, Sporting Kansas City.
Another one of the sports Nick Gholkar enjoys playing is golf. He currently has a handicap of 15-17. When he has the chance, he loves to head out to the golf course to work on his game.
Gholkar also enjoys scuba diving. He holds both National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) and Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) certifications. He describes himself as an adventurer and has traveled to a number of popular diving spots. There are still a number of places left on his list to visit, though, such as Fiji.
Nick Gholkar has been a student at the University of Missouri - Kansas City for the past few years. The university is a public research school that is part of the University of Missouri system. It was founded in 1933.
The school itself has an interesting history, notes Nick Gholkar, as the original plan for it was created by Methodists. The Methodists wanted to build a school on the border of the states of Kansas and Missouri to honor both Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee. But, due to disagreements and in-fighting, the Methodists walked away from the project and the school ended up being named the University of Kansas City.
The first class at the university had 264 students and 17 faculty members. From there, the school grew by leaps and bounds. In 1938, the Kansas City School of Law merged with the university and the Kansas City College of Pharmacy merged with the university in 1943. Other schools that also joined the university included the Kansas City Conservatory of Music and the Kansas City-Western Dental College. In 1963, the school officially joined the University of Missouri System.
Today, the university has over 15,000 students, more than 10,000 of whom are undergraduates such as Nick Gholkar. The university consists of 11 separate schools and colleges. The School of Law is one of only four law schools in the state. The school that houses the accounting program is the Henry W. Bloch School of Management, which was founded in 1952 and is an AACSB accredited business school.
Sports
At the age of 13, Nick Gholkar took up the sport of golf and has been playing ever since. His game has improved greatly since he started playing as a teenager. His handicap is currently 15-17.
In golf, the handicap is figured out by calculating scores from a player's past 10 games. The handicap is used to estimated how many strokes above or below par a player can play. At the end of a game, the player's handicap is subtracted from the actual number of strokes he played, giving him a net score.
Along with golf, Gholkar has also been an avid tennis player for years. Tennis is typically played by two players or by two teams of two players. Although tennis is a challenging game, it can be played by almost anyone who is able to hold a racket. Over the years, Gholkar has enjoyed playing matches against a number of different opponents.
Nick Gholkar has also been scuba diving for years. He's had the opportunity to travel to a number of exciting and exotic locations to dive. Over the years, he's been to Manihi, Bora Bora, Turks and Caicos, and Yap to dive. Bora Bora is located in the Pacific Ocean and is part of the Society Islands archipelago. It's a major destination for tourists and most of its activities, such as diving, are water based.
Turks and Caicos Islands are located in the Caribbean, just south of the Bahamas. The islands are a British territory and are known for their beautiful beaches and lovely water. They are an ideal place to dive, since the ocean around them is full of amazing sea life.
As a diver, Gholkar has earned both advanced PADI certification and NAUI certification. The two certifications mean that he has been trained by both organizations that offer scuba training. The National Association of Underwater Instructors is a non-profit organization that offers several levels of training. The non-profit was founded in 1959. The training courses it offers include recreational diving, leadership courses, specialty courses and technical courses, such as cave diving.
Unlike NAUI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) is not a non-profit. PADI was formed in 1966 and is currently the world's largest diving membership and training association in the world. Like NAUI, it has several different levels of certification training. It also offers non-certification courses, such as "Discover Scuba Diving" and "Discover Snorkeling.
Art
Nick Gholkar has supported the arts throughout his life. He's been a supporter of the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in the heart of Kansas City. The mission of the Nelson Atkins Museum is to enhance the cultural and educational life of the city. It aims to promote enjoyment and understanding of art as well as the culture behind the art. As a supporter of the museum, Gholkar has regularly attended its exhibition openings.
The museum currently has more than 33,500 pieces of art in its collections. The collections at the Nelson Atkins Museum are incredibly varied. It has pieces that date back to the 4th millennium BCE from cultures such as ancient Egypt and Greece. It also has more modern pieces, such as American artworks from the 18th century through the second World War. The museum also owns contemporary artworks from the US and Europe as well as photography, prints and decorative arts.
Charity Work
Nick Gholkar has also spent a considerable amount of time helping others. He's worked with a number of charitable organizations as a volunteer. For example, he worked with the non-profit Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat for Humanity's mission is to provide homes to people who need them. The houses are built using volunteer labor and donated supplies. The homes are then sold to partner families in need. The partner families pay for the homes using low-interest, affordable loans.
Gholkar has also participated in the Relay for Life Cancer Walk. The walk is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Four million people participate in the walk each year.
Relay for Life is slightly different than other fund-raising walks. It's an overnight walk that takes place on a track. Team members camp out around the track and take turns walking through the night.
Gholkar has also helped others by making use of his accounting skills. As a candidate member of Beta Alpha Psi, he's worked as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA connects accountants or accountants in training with low-income people. The accountants prepare tax returns for people at no charge. Nick Gholkar enjoyed VITA, as it allowed him to make use of his skills while helping others.
As a junior in college, Nick Gholkar has just over a year to go before he graduates. His graduation is currently on track for 2014. He has big hopes and dreams for his accounting career.
After graduation, his immediate goal is to find a position at one of the country's top 10 public accounting firms. A few of the best firms in the country include Price Waterhouse Coopers, Grant Thornton, Deloitte and Ernst and Young. His long-term career goal is to move into a position in private equity mergers and acquisitions.
Career goals aren't the only plans Gholkar has for the future. He also has several personal goals. Although he's been able to travel to many beautiful places to scuba dive, he still has some places left that he'd like to go. One of the places is the island of Fiji. He can easily say that Fiji is definitely his dream trip.
He also has a few travel goals that have no connection to scuba diving. He'd love to travel to Monte Carlo, in Monaco, to see the famous casino featured in a number of James Bond movies, such as "Golden Eye" and "Never Say Never Again." The casino dates back to the mid-19th century.
Nick Gholkar also has travel goals related to art. As a big fan of art museums, he hopes to one day make it to New York City to check out the museum scene there. New York is home to two of his "must-see" museums, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Guggenheim Museum.
