Charles Bahn began his eye care career with a diverse education. At Tulane University, he earned three undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Biology with honors, a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology, and a Bachelor of Arts in German. His triple-degree achievement reflects his commitment to strong education.
Charles Bahn, MD remained at Tulane to pursue his graduate education. He earned multiple graduate degrees, earning the designations of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Science in Anatomy.
Dr. Bahn’s Master of Science in Anatomy degree allowed him to pursue a varied skillset relating to both biology and medicine. He came to understand the interconnected nature of the body, a perspective that continued to influence his research and professional endeavors in subsequent years.
Upon completing his multiple graduate degrees, he chose to specialize in ophthalmology.
The following years of his education required a professional internship, a period of residency, and a fellowship.
Dr. Bahn pursued a surgical internship at the University of Oregon Health Science Center in Portland. The internship allowed him the opportunity to explore the real-world applications of his education in medicine.

Charles, MD then attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he earned a Master of Science in Medicine in 1983.
During his residency, also at the University of Michigan, he worked alongside established
professionals to learn how to diagnose, treat, and surgically address eye and vision disorders.
Dr. Bahn also specialized in treating glaucoma and diseases of the corneal at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
With his education completed, Charles Bahn, MD began his professional career. He served as a major in the United States Air Force, an avenue in which he could serve his country with his ophthalmological expertise.
Relocating to Bethesda, Maryland, he became Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Armed Forces Medical School. As a major in the Air Force, he pursued research initiatives and taught classes in his field. He provided medical services to patients at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Walter Reed Army Hospital, and Malcom Grow Air Force Hospital.
In 1987, Charles, MD completed his four years at the Uniformed Service University. He launched a private practice, prepared to use his education and professional experience to assist patients with eye care concerns.

At the Armed Forces Medical School, Charles, MD examined the effect of lasers on the eye. His insights resulted in research articles regarding the effects of lasers specifically on the cornea.
Charles Bahn, MD also conducted several studies regarding corneal transplantation, and he has contributed research to the body of work involving eye growth and aging.
Organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology have accepted his work for presentations and publications.
In 1984, he co-authored “Slit Lamp: Examination and Photography” along with Csaba L. Martonyi and Roger F. Meyer MD. This work explores the techniques used to examine and document eye conditions using a slit lamp biological microscope. The work provided detailed and specific information with applications in ophthalmology as well as optometry and ophthalmic photography.
“Slit Lamp” is in its third edition. The latest incarnation features two new chapters and over 400 detailed illustrations for clarity.
He is proud to have contributed to the vast body of knowledge regarding ophthalmology and health.
Since the start of his education and professional career, Dr. Bahn has received a number of awards. He was awarded a Health Professions Scholarship from the Air Force. Tulane University awarded him the Hausser Pathology Award, as well as the Norman Rogers Cancer Research Award.
Charles Bahn, MD received the PI Murrill Memorial Scholarship from the University of Michigan. He was named a Heed Fellow, and received the Surgeon General’s Award.
The Uniformed Services Medical School of the Health Sciences granted Charles, MD the Meritorious Service Award, and he received the Defense Meritorious Service Award from the US Department of Defense.
In 2012, Charles Bahn, MD was named one of the top doctors of the D.C. metropolitan region by Washingtonian Magazine.
