Born in 1950 as Karyl Eugene Harkins Jr. in a family where the father and his father were car mechanics, Gene decided early on that he just didn’t want to continue in the family trade. From an early age he read books by Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, and authors of astrophysics books, developing his interest in science and in the human mind. Being exposed to Native American culture, he also developed an interest in Native American legends and medicine, which pointed the way toward his eventual immersion into natural healing.
In his early teens he assembled chemistry sets that sprawled around three walls of his room, and he busied himself working on the production of different chemical compounds. This fledgling scientific interest quickly expanded to electrical projects, from the first homemade radio using gallium crystals, paper roll, coated wire and a safety pin to broadcasting television signals and receiving it over a laser beam. While other young people his age where mowing lawns for additional money, Harkins was changing brakes on neighbors cars, rebuilding automobile carbonators, and performing a number of other sophisticated electrical projects. He also become enamored of classical music and operas and then later pop music.
During the sixties, the overall cultural fascination with Native American herbs was further developed and was expanded to homeopathy. New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, offered ample philosophical development and discussion of different natural remedies and their applications that continues today. He immersed himself in this world and grew in both his interest and conviction in homeopathy’s merits.
