Known as “Ole Miss” by supporters of the university and their well-known football program, it is the second largest university in the state and is located in Oxford, Mississippi. They are a part of the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA when it comes to athletics and their football team is one of the top teams in their conference. The football culture is much like any other school in the Southeast United States in that it drives a lot of the enrollment and school pride.

The Ole Miss Rebels are a championship football team in the SEC, proudly boasting three national championships. They are a Division I ranking team and play against some of the best college football teams in the nation. They regularly square off against University of Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, and Tennessee, to name a few of the nationally ranked teams in their conference. They have many conference titles under their belt and three claimed national championships. They were originally known as the Mississippi Flood until the 1930s when they changed their name to the Rebels. Controversy over this name and the team mascot have prompted some reconsideration of the name, but the team has decided to keep the mascot name and replace the mascot itself.

After graduating with his bachelor’s degree in 1999, Brian McLaurin decided to continue with his education at Ole Miss. He enrolled in the University of Mississippi School of Law and earned his Juris Doctorate in 2001. The University of Mississippi School of Law is considered one of the top five schools in the country for “best value.” It is also the only school in the entire nation that has an aerospace law program for people who want to go into that particular branch of law. Many of the school’s alumni have gone on to serve in various branches of Mississippi legislature and judicial system as well as judicial and legislative branches of the national government. Brian McLaurin joined the distinguished ranks of his fellow alumni when he became a practicing lawyer for the Mississippi Bar, the Fifth Circuit for the U.S. Court of Appeals, and the Northern District U.S. Court for Mississippi.

Brian McLaurin’s previous law career included starting his own practice for civil litigation. He started his own practice, McLaurin & Associates, PLLC , in 2003 which focused on general civil litigation and criminal defense. he quickly became one of the leaders in his field. He took on many cases that included employment and labor law issues, OSHA, complex mitigation, workers compensation, product liability and other criminal defense areas. He worked hard to turn his practice into one recognized in the area and managed more than 500 active files a month. He also supervised and managed many attorneys in his practice. Later in practice he acquired and operated McLaurin Law Firm, both practices have since been relinquished.

McLaurin did not only focus on criminal issues at his practice. He also helped many people with preparing their wills and making sure all of their paperwork was in place to ensure an easy resolution for their family. After clients passed, he regularly helped managed their estates as well to make sure the process went as smooth as possible.

After having his own practices for a few years, Brian McLaurin decided to shift his attention from actively litigating to managing other attorneys. He also managed lawyers in the field of workplace safety. By helping to respond to complaints filed by groups such as OSHA and the NLRB, he helped to make workplaces safer and more compliant. He was also in on the decision-making for any policy changes that affected hiring and other regulatory matters that needed addressing.

Besides working in civil litigation, he also spent time on the criminal law side of his field. As a proven trial lawyer, he successfully defended thousands of clients in court over various charges. He also worked in other aspects of law, such as health care, insurance, estate law and patents. His commitment to helping those in need of legal consultation kept Brian McLaurin sharp and skilled at his job as an attorney. He never missed an opportunity to take on a challenging legal matter as well as make sure the attorneys working under him were working to the same standard as he was.

Known for his exceptional trial advocacy skills, he regularly earned acquittals in cases with some of the toughest charges, during his career he has gotten clients charged off the hook for manslaughter, rape, larceny, identity theft, narcotics use and possession, embezzlement and assault.

Yet work is not the only thing that occupies his time. He is a wine lover and has a few favorite red wines. Red wines are typically bolder and fruitier than other white wine choices. The color comes from the skin of the black grapes that are used to create the wine, which stays on during the fermenting process. They usually age longer than white wines as well. These reasons have made red wine the favorite of many wine lovers because of the ability to take more notes on the different characteristics of the wines.

His favorite is a 1993 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon but also enjoys some of the smaller batch Washington Pinot Noirs. He has paid more attention to the smaller wine producers recently as he feels they are making quality wines that are catching up to the better known products. Brian McLaurin has taken classes toward becoming a sommelier.
