Kris Lewonowski, M.D. was born and raised in Little Rock, AR. It was here near his childhood home that he began his medical education and career, which would eventually take him across the ocean and back before he reached the level of experience that he enjoys today.
Education and Training
The first step toward becoming an expert orthopedic surgeon for Kris was to enroll at Hendrix College in Conway, AR, for his undergraduate studies. He graduated in May of 1979 with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. He then returned to his hometown of Little Rock. Here he joined the college of medicine at the University of Arkansas, eventually graduating in May of 1984 with his Doctorate of Medicine degree.
The next month, June of 1984, Dr. Lewonowski moved to Los Angeles, CA, to undergo his surgical internship at the Los Angeles County and University of Southern California Medical Center, or LAC/USC. This internship was completed in June of 1985, at which point he returned to Little Rock once again to begin working in a private practice – Medistat Medical Clinics. After a year at this practice, he moved back to California to pursue a clinical orthopedics research appointment in Downey, CA, at the Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center.
In 1988, Kris Lewonowski, M.D. went back to the LAC/USC Medical Center in Los Angeles in order to undertake an orthopedic surgery residency. He then spent the next five years receiving hands-on experience and training in total joint replacement and spinal surgery. After completing his residency in 1993, he spent another year in Los Angeles serving the USC University Hospital as a Clinical Instructor in orthopedics.
While working with the USC University Hospital, Dr. Lewonowski also undertook a fellowship in arthritis and joint implant surgery at their Center for Arthritis and Joint Implant Surgery. After obtaining this fellowship, he then traveled to London, England, to pursue another fellowship in 1994. This time he earned a fellowship in spine surgery from the London Clinic.
Once he had obtained his fellowship in London, Kris went to Nottingham, England, in February of 1995. Once again he undertook a fellowship, this time at the Queen’s Medical Center. Here he earned an AO Fellowship in Spine Surgery, the pursuit of which also took him to Davos, Switzerland.
Work Experience
After completing his fellowships in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Kris Lewonowski, M.D. returned to the United States in 1996 to Wichita, KS. Here he began practicing orthopedic medicine at the Kansas Orthopedic Center, P.A., and continued doing so for the next 15 years. In April of 2011, he left the center for a position with the nearby Kansas Joint & Spine Institute, also in Wichita.
Finally, in June of 2013, Kris joined Galicia Medical Group, whom he still practices with today. This gives him nearly three decades of orthopedic care and treatment experience through his practice, residency, internship, and multiple fellowships. The most recent 18 years of his career have been dedicated to serving patients all over the Wichita area with their joint replacement and spinal surgery needs.
Research and Achievement
In addition to his many years of education, training, and practice, Dr. Lewonowski has completed many professional achievements. For example, on top of all of his completed fellowships, he has gained board certification in orthopedic surgery.
Kris Lewonowski, M.D. has also presented both papers and posters at the Knee Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the North American Spine Society, and the Orthopaedic Research Society. In addition, he has been published in many different medical journals such as Spine, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, the Spine Journal, the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, and the Journal of Arthroplasty. On top of these, Kris has also had his articles cited in the Orthopaedic Knowledge Update Classics Bibliography.
Moving forward, Kris Lewonowski, M.D. will continue to build on his effectiveness as an orthopedic professional by maintaining and improving the quality of his total joint replacement and spinal surgery services. One major way that he intends to accomplish this is to go above and beyond the CME credits that are required of him. Though most states only require medical professionals to undertake between 30 and 50 hours of CME per year, has completed upwards of 200 hours on average.
Dr. Lewonowski also looks forward to many more years providing orthopedic service to patients throughout Kansas. His greatest source of professional joy stems from his work with his patients and his ability to help them with their medical issues. To this end, he will continue utilizing his spine and joint surgical expertise to help those individuals suffering from orthopedic problems to regain their normal lives.
Kris Lewonowski, M.D. also seeks to improve the orthopedic knowledge of both his patients and other individuals by spreading the word about important issues in orthopedics. For example, as recent studies show that obesity has adverse effects on joint health, he seeks to educate his patients about the orthopedic dangers of obesity. He also advocates against any doctors who provide their patients with surgical procedures that they do not need.
Beyond his career goals, Dr. Lewonowski’s biggest plans for the future all involve his family. He and his wife have two children, a son who is a Marine and a daughter who is studying interior design at college. While he is busy planning for his eventual productive and healthy retirement, in the meantime, he enjoys trying to become an even better husband and father.
