Hollins University

Hollins University was founded in 1842 as the first chartered women's college in Virginia. It has about 800 female undergraduates, as well as nearly 300 students in its graduate school, which is coeducational. A private institution emphasizing the liberal arts, Hollins offers undergraduate majors and graduate degrees (MFAs and MAs) in subjects such as creative writing, liberal studies, children's literature, teaching, and film studies. Notable alumni include the first woman publisher at Time (Elizabeth Valk Long, '72) and the first woman to be named a White House correspondent (Ann Compton, '69).
