Technically speaking, University of Strathclyde specializes in the technical. The school, which calls itself "the place of useful learning," is the legacy of an 18th century University of Glasgow professor, John Anderson, who saw the need for a technical institution that would be open to the public. Anderson's Institution began in 1796. Over the centuries the school broadened its horizons, and today it boasts some 20,000 students in such fields as science, engineering, business, and education on two campuses. Its Strathclyde Business School has one of the largest academic faculties in Europe.
