Snyder's Drug Stores, which began as a Depression-era cigar shop, is confronting another macro-economic slump. The regional drugstore chain operates more than 90 company-owned and independent pharmacies, more than half of which are in Minnesota, but is beginning to close stores as the recession hits home. While pharmacy operations account for more than 60% of total sales, Snyder's Drug Stores also offers general merchandise, giftware, photo processing, postal substations, mobile mammograms and bone density tests, and even smoking cessation programs. The company operates stores in Iowa, Illinois, Michigan. Minnesota, and Montana. Canada's Katz Group owns Snyder's Drug Stores.
