A historically African American institution of higher learning, Prairie View A&M University offers its 8,400 students baccalaureate degrees in about 50 academic majors, nearly 40 graduate degree programs, and four doctoral programs through nine colleges and schools. Its main campus in southeast Texas, home to the university's nine colleges and schools, is about 40 miles outside of Houston; its nursing college maintains a branch in that city's Texas Medical Center. Part of The Texas A&M University System, Prairie View A&M was founded in 1876 and was originally known as Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth.
