James Madison is known as the Father of the Constitution and America's fourth president, but he also has a public institution of higher education named after him. James Madison University (JMU) offers some 70 undergraduate and 35 graduate degrees through more than a half-dozen colleges, including arts and letters, business, education, visual and performing arts, and science and mathematics. The university enrolls about 18,000 students; the student/faculty ratio is 15-to-1. JMU has men's athletic programs in baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis. The women's program boasts nearly a dozen sports, including field hockey and lacrosse. The school was established in 1908 in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
