Outward Bound USA provides adventure and opportunities for personal growth to 60,000 people each year through its four wilderness schools, two urban centers, and school reform program. Programs are designed to challenge, develop self-reliance and leadership skills, and instill integrity in participants. Students participate in outdoor activities such as backpacking, dog sledding, rock climbing, and snowboarding. They learn about natural history, orienteering, cultures, and topography. Courses last from a few days to more than a month, and some colleges and high schools offer academic credit to participants. Outward Bound offers special programs for troubled teens.
