This is no middle-of-the-road educational institution! Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) was founded in 1911 as a school for teacher training. These days, it offers bachelor's and master's degrees through eight university colleges that include basic and applied sciences, business, education and behavioral science, honors, liberal arts, mass communication, and graduate studies. The school bestows master's degrees in ten areas including business and education. It also confers a Specialist in Education degree and doctorate in philosophy. It has an enrollment of more than 25,000 students. Notable alumni include Nobel Laureate James Buchanan (class of '40) and the late Senator Albert Gore Sr. (class of '32).
