John Carroll University is a Roman Catholic school that offers degree programs in more than 40 fields of the liberal arts, social sciences, natural sciences, business, and interdisciplinary studies at the undergraduate level, and in selected areas at the master's level. Operated by the Society of Jesus -- the Jesuits -- it provides instruction to more than 4,000 students. The school was founded in 1886 as St. Ignatius College, then renamed in 1923 in honor of the first Catholic archbishop in the US. Women were admitted to John Carroll for the first time in 1968.
