Every community needs an alternative newspaper, especially a city that calls itself "the live music capital of the world." Austin Chronicle Corp. publishes a weekly newspaper in Austin, Texas, boasting a circulation of more than 90,000 and featuring comprehensive coverage of the city's lively music and cultural scene. The tabloid-sized Austin Chronicle is also a source political and environmental reporting. In addition to its newspaper, the company serves as a sponsor for such annual events as South by Southwest (operated by SXSW), the Austin Music Awards Show, and The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival. Publisher Nick Barbaro and editor Louis Black led a group that started the paper in 1981.
