Center for Literacy's mission is to unleash the power of literacy to improve lives. Founded in West Philadelphia as an adult education tutoring program in 1968, Center for Literacy (CFL) quickly expanded to other areas of Philadelphia in need of adult tutoring. The demand for tutoring services soon exceeded the availability of volunteer tutors, and CFL began adding classroom instruction for adult education. Preparation classes for the GED® test soon followed, and in a few short years CFL was offering free neighborhood classes throughout Philadelphia. Soon after this the program expanded to also work with immigrants who desired to improve their English language skills. Today we serve 1,000 adult learners a year in over 50 classes a week at 17 different sites across Philadelphia.
