The first institution of higher learning in Texas, Southwestern University was chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1840. The liberal arts university consists of The Brown College of Arts and Sciences and The Sarofim School of Fine Arts. It offers more than two-dozen undergraduate majors, as well as pre-professional and certification programs, and confers bachelor's degrees in arts, music, fine arts, and science. Affiliated with The United Methodist Church, Southwestern University has an enrollment of more than 1,200 students. More than 80% of students live in residence halls on campus, which is located on the edge of the Texas Hill Country in Georgetown, Texas, just north of Austin.
