Kopin's semiconductor wafers are good at copin' with high speeds. The company makes specialized gallium arsenide (GaAs) wafers with heterojunction bipolar transistors vertically engineered onto the surface (horizontal is the industry norm). Companies such as Skyworks Solutions use the specialized GaAs wafers -- costlier than silicon but with higher performance -- to make integrated circuits for wireless and fiber-optic gear that demands high speed or low power consumption. Kopin also makes tiny display devices used by Panasonic, Samsung Electronics, SANYO Electric, and Victor Company of Japan in digital camcorders. The company gets more than three-quarters of its sales in the Americas.
