At Jarvis Christian College, life is all about opining amongst the pines. The private, not-for-profit liberal arts college is located on 1,000 acres in the Piney Woods of East Texas. The four-year, historically black college enrolls about 550 students per semester. It operates divisions of arts and sciences, education, and business administration. Jarvis' Division of Arts and Sciences is especially well known for its programs in geosciences and astronomy. Other popular fields of study include religion, science and mathematics, and chemistry. Jarvis Christian College is named after Major J.J. Davis, who donated 456 acres of land in 1910 for the purpose of building the college.
