Gemcom Software International provides software applications and services used by mining companies to manage functions such as planning and production. Its products are used by more than 1,000 mining operations that are owned by such companies as Anglo American, BHP Billiton, De Beers, Inco, Rio Tinto, and Teck Cominco. Products include Whittle (strategic mine planning) and GEMS (technical mining planning). The company has offices in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Russia, South Africa, and the US. Gemcom was created in 1985 as a spinoff from a consulting engineering company. In 2008 the company was acquired by JMI Equity and The Carlyle Group.
