Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway operates over a network of about 950 miles of track between the Ohio River and Lake Erie, passing through parts of Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The company's system links the coal fields of West Virginia (Wheeling) with industrial Cleveland and its docks (Lake Erie). In addition to coal, the railroad hauls cargo including aggregates, iron ore, steel products, agricultural products, plastic resins. Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway owns some 575 miles of track; trackage rights over other railroads account for the rest of the company's network. The railroad traces its roots back to 1871 but took its current form in 1990.
